“Going green” has been a popular topic in tourism for many years and Myanmar Tourism Marketing has extended the topic slightly more literally and announces at the ITB 2017 in Berlin 10 reasons to visit Myanmar during the green season. The organization with over 100 members from the industry argues that for many travellers the so called “green season” which falls from May till September can actually be a perfect period to visit the destination.
Statistically it turns even out that the main tourist attractions in Myanmar like Bagan, Mandalay, Northern Shan state, Kalaw and Inle Lake only get rainfall on 25% of all days during the so called raining season and even if it rains on these 25% of the days it’s usually short. “in Burmese language we actually call the area near Bagan the dry zone” says Su Su Tin, MD of Exo Travel Myanmar” as we know the area has an almost desert style climate. Being afraid of a drop of rain while visiting the temples of Bagan is really not necessary” she continues.
To emphasize on travelling during the green season MTM identified 10 clear advantages for tourists to visit Myanmar from May till September:
  • 50 shades of green (from paddy fields to forest)
  • Not too hot in the dry zone – not too cold in the mountains
  • More sustainable (support earning a stable, year-round live able income)
  • More hours of daylight sightseeing in a day (early sunrise, late sunset)
  • No dust
  • Stunning landscapes
  • Fruit, vegetables and other food at its best
  • No queues (or other tourists photo bombing your selfie)
  • Your preferred room / hotel / guide will be available
  • Good promotions, excellent value for money
Emirates Airlines who launched daily flights to Yangon last year understands the advantages of travelling in the green season and will continue offering daily flights to Myanmar during the green season
To encourage even more tourists to visit Myanmar in this period many MTM members have come up with additional benefits and promotions for tourist. The most remarkable is probably offering a free lunch to every client IF it happens to rain for more than 1 hour during your sightseeing “up country”. Other promotions are “stay 3 – pay 2” offers at hotels or “take as much as luggage as you can for free” for domestic airlines to emphasize on the fact that a flight in Myanmar doesn’t include any “hidden costs” and is actually very affordable.
“So I guess there IS such a thing as “a free lunch” when travelling in Myanmar during the green season” says Edwin Briels, MD of Khiri Travel Myanmar, “although it’s not that often that it rains more than 1 hour upcountry.”
Participating travel agencies companies in Myanmar are: Exo, Columbus, Asia DMC, Khiri, Adventure Myanmar, Sweet Memory, Asia Central Link, Taw Win, Sunbird, JTB Polestar, Ethical Seven Star, Mighty Myanmar, New Motion, Vision Travel, All Asia Exclusive and Orchestra Travel. Hotels participating are Myanmar Hill Lodges,
Vintage Luxury Yacht hotel, Villa Inle, Sanctum Inle, Melia, Inya Lake, Chatrium, Sule Shangri-La, Summit Parkview, Novotel Yangon and Amazing hotels. Airlines participating in promotions are Air KBZ, FMI airlines, Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways and golden Myanmar airlines.
Conditions applies so it’s best to follow Myanmar Tourism Marketing website or ask your local travel agents about conditions.
There is a strong perception that the best time to visit Myanmar is from October to March and the people living and working in Myanmar actually did notice that probably the best kept secret of the country is a visit during the green season for all the above 10 reasons” says May Myat Mon Win, Vice Chairman (Marketing), Myanmar Tourism Federation, “we now realize it might be the right time to give away this best kept secret and share the advantages of travelling in the green season with the rest of the world. “
Myanmar Tourism Marketing has announced to organise more than 10 familiarisation trips during the green season for tour operators, travel press and other media to come and experience the green season for themselves. MTM is also organizing a competition to win a free trip to Myanmar
