Beethoven anniversary demonstrates appeal to tourists

The Beethoven anniversary in 2020 offers enormous opportunities for attracting tourists to
Bonn and the region. Surrounded by the varied countryside of the Rhine-Sieg district, the city
of Beethoven's birth lies at the gateway to the romantic Rhine directly at the foot of the
Siebengebirge, which is shrouded in legend. With an impressive range of cultural activities such
as the Museum Mile as well as other high quality museums and as the place where Ludwig van
Beethoven was born, the region is very popular with national and international travel agents.
"As Beethoven's city and the German city of the United Nations, culture and sustainability are
extremely important to us, also as far as our tourist focus is concerned", said Bonn's mayor
Ashok Sridharan.

New record number of overnight stays
Already for the seventh year in a row the Bonn region has set a record for overnight stays. In
2016 the city of Bonn hit the 1.5 million mark for the first time. The Rhine-Sieg district also
remains at a stable level with approximately 1.3 million overnight stays. "The positive trend in
the overnight figures is continuing. In 2016 the decisive factors to mention were once again
international conferences and congresses in particular, the DAX stock exchange companies
with their high volume of business travellers as well as the strongly performing medium-sized
businesses, new products and exciting events from Bonn and the region", reported
Udo Schäfer, Managing Director of Tourismus & Congress GmbH Region Bonn / Rhine-Sieg /
Ahrweiler (T&C). The city of Bonn recorded a total rise of 2.9 percent in overnight stays in 2016 (total
1,539,367 overnight stays). There were therefore 43,821 more overnight stays (O) in Bonn
than during the same period of the previous year. Visitors from Germany accounted for 77.9
percent (+5.2 percent) and those from abroad for 22.1 percent (- 4.5 percent). Among the
international visitors the Benelux countries top the list with 45,615 O, the Arab Gulf states
come second with 29,275 O, the USA in third place with 27,900 O followed by the UK with
26,161 O in fourth position and Switzerland in fifth place with 18,129. "The further rise in overnight figures reflects the appeal to tourists of Bonn and the surrounding region. The seventh record in a row is a sign that the continued, joint efforts are
paying off", said the delighted mayor Ashok Sridharan. "Growth strengthens us in our dealings
and enables us to view the future positively, precisely against the background of major future
challenges such as the COP 23 World Climate Conference at the end of 2017 as well as the
significant Beethoven anniversary in 2020. We must therefore focus on having the
corresponding hotel capacities available". The Rhine-Sieg district recorded a slight fall in overnight stays of 0.7 percent compared with the previous year (total 1,324,617 O). In other words, there were 8,773 fewer overnight stays
(O) than during the same period of the previous year. Visitors chiefly came from Germany
accounting for 86.2 percent (-1.1 percent) and 13.8 percent from abroad (+1.9 percent). The
number of arrivals declined by 0.5 percent compared with the previous year (total 606,693
arrivals). Increases were achieved for overnight stays by EU visitors (+ 5 percent, total of
149,377 O). For international visitors, the Benelux countries were at the top with 57,712 O, the UK with
11,434 O in second place, followed by Poland with 10,742 O and Switzerland with 7,450 O.
District Business Development Manager Dr. Hermann Tengler is delighted that tourism
numbers have remained stable at a high level with over 1.3 million overnight stays and
607,000 visitor arrivals in the Rhine-Sieg district. "This means that the average occupancy in
businesses offering overnight accommodation continues to rise. It is an important indicator of
competitiveness for small and medium-sized businesses in the tourist industry in the Rhine-
Sieg district."

Beethoven
Tourismus & Congress GmbH has been actively marketing Beethoven's year of 2020 in a wide
range of areas for a long time. The major event is being promoted internationally via
collaboration with the German National Tourist Board. For example currently in Hong Kong
using an animated light hologram. "We have also been successful in bringing the travel industry
to Bonn" says T&C Managing Director Udo Schäfer with obvious pleasure. In 2018 it is likely that
both the German Tourist Association and the VPR will hold their conferences in Bonn. “This is
the optimal occasion to advertise the year of Beethoven even more", said Schäfer. Further
discussions are planned at ITB in Berlin to make travel agents aware of the topic. The current
Meeting Guide for the Bonn region also focusses on Beethoven 2020. The conference sector is
therefore also being used to promote the major event and attract potential new events to Bonn
and the surrounding region. "The Bonn Beethoven institutions will once again be showcased together at ITB this year.
Beethoven Jubiläums Gesellschaft mbH, Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Beethoven Festival Bonn and
Beethoven Orchestra Bonn have designed their own, new stand "Beethoven in Bonn".
Through their joint appearance at the trade fair the four cultural institutions are seeking
greater awareness of Bonn as Beethoven's city with an all year-round cultural programme",
according to the mayor of Bonn Ashok Sridharan.
Bundling their presence is also taking place in view of the Beethoven anniversary in 2020,
during which Bonn intends to celebrate Beethoven's 250th birthday throughout the year. The
Rhine-Sieg district wants to celebrate the Beethoven anniversary year of 2020 together with
the city of Bonn.
