ZKM – the digital Bauhaus: Exhibition The Whole World a Bauhaus

Karlsruhe, 28 Feb 2019 – The ZKM | Karlsruhe celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2019 with numerous events and exhibitions. Because of its innovative, groundbreaking and forward-looking exhibitions, the ZKM has reached 4th place in the current ranking of the world's largest database ArtFacts.Net – after the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Biennale di Venezia and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The ZKM thus not only occupies the top position among German museums, but has also become one of the world's most important art institutions.

A highlight of the anniversary year is Writing the History of the Future, the presentation of the ZKM's extensive collection. The exhibition takes up the major themes that the ZKM has dealt with over the past 30 years: artistic and social change against the background of digitisation. In order to combine this historical perspective with the current educational experiment Open Codes, the exhibition Open Codes will be extended until 7 April 2019. From 23 February, Part I of Writing the History of the Future will open on the first floor, in the immediate vicinity. In this way it will be possible to draw a line between "living in digital worlds" and the history of electronic and digital art, between exhibition and collection practice, which have been following common lines for 30 years.

ZKM – the digital Bauhaus: Exhibition The Whole World a Bauhaus from 25 October 2019

The ZKM was founded as a "digital Bauhaus" with the aim of continuing the work of the Bauhaus and transferring it to the digital age: "Instead of machines, however, the ZKM relies on media and instead of material on data. The ZKM focuses on the moving image and sound as the medium of art". (Peter Weibel, artistic-scientific director of ZKM) On 25 October 2019, the ZKM in cooperation with the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) Stuttgart will open the exhibition Die ganze Welt ein Bauhaus.

The show celebrated its premiere in Buenos Aires and was followed by a tour of Argentina and Mexico. How did the Bauhaus succeed in becoming the epitome of social, creative, and didactic radical renewal? The exhibition The Whole World a Bauhaus is devoted to this theme in two parts. The exhibition title is programmatic: „The Whole World a Bauhaus“ is a quotation from Bauhaus student and teacher Fritz Kuhr (1928). It alludes to the fact that the Bauhaus redefined the parameters of art, crafts, and technology, when Walter Gropius declared the aim of design to include the whole spectrum of design and also social practice in every sense.
