For the utilization of large amounts of data, many old systems have now become obsolete; humans alone cannot cope with the complexity of big data analysis. In his speech at ITB 2019 in Berlin, Klaus Kohlmayr from IDeaS looks into the near future of the hotel industry and revenue management and challenges the status quo.

HEIDELBERG, February 26, 2019 – According to a recent Google survey, 57 percent of young travelers in the industry rely on tailor-made information based on personal preference or past behavior. 69 percent of travelers are loyal to the tour operator, who personalizes their experiences online and offline. Personalized experiences are desired by hotel guests.

360-degree view with old hotel systems not possible
However, a large number of hotels today still use outdated data infrastructures. The reservation systems of many global hotel chains are based on technology introduced in the 1950s and ’60s. Although they continue to function well, have high availability, and handle a significant amount of data, you have a major disadvantage: they are not focused on customer retention and personalization. A 360-degree view of the hotel guest is impossible with systems that do not communicate with each other.

"Application" of the hotel industry is imminent
In his presentation "The Role Of Humans In The Future Of Revenue – A Story Of Magic, Intelligence And Dogs" at ITB Berlin on March 6, 2019, Klaus Kohlmayr, chief evangelist of IDeaS Revenue Solutions, addresses the most urgent questions of the progressive "application of processes," a look into the near future of the hotel industry.
"The success of Uber and Airbnb is based on consolidated data platforms that connect many thousands of customer data points into a single image, allowing highly customized and personalized communications and offerings,” said Kohlmayr. “In principle, these business models are very efficient apps.”

Revenue Management: The GPS for the hotelier
As IDeaS’ chief evangelist, Klaus Kohlmayr questions strategic processes, gives food for thought, and reinvigorates the discussion about the future of revenue management and pricing in the hotel and travel industry. "Revenue management systems are now mature enough to hold a hundred million process transactions in a year, millions and millions of interactions, and determine the links between these variables that must be included in a pricing decision,” said Kohlmayr. “Just as the GPS of a modern navigation system does not take into account many factors that cannot be overseen as an individual, hoteliers today trust their revenue management system to make the right decisions."
